Teaching English is Hard...
So, this past month I've had a lot of trouble teaching English. It's hard to teach. It's a lot harder to teach than history, because it seems to me, that in history, I was teaching content. I told the students to read a paragraph about a certain event in American history, and then I would discuss it with them. In English, I have to tell them how to read, how to use context clues, how to summarize, and how to grasp the main idea in a single passage. I have to teach a skill, and that is the major difference. It's tough, trust me, but it's not impossible. Another thing is the fact that I have not studied grammar since, um, high school. Also, 2 weeks is not enough time to perfect our students problems in subject verb agreement, or writing techniques, but I do think that we have helped them tremendously by spoon-feeding them ever so slowly. It's been extremely challenging, but fun. Our kids are great, but very stubborn. They have learned, and that is what I care about. Hopefully, they can take the information that they have gathered from summer school and apply it to their next year in school, and succeed then.
SO, much respect to all ENGLISH teachers. Here is a funny quote that I came across, and that I definitely can relate to.
"The secret of teaching is to appear to have known all your life what you learned this afternoon." --Anonymous
